Ahmedabad LD engineering students convert salty water to drinking water

According to the students, the project is to develop an IoT-based system that purifies sea water using solar energy. Our project is to convert sea salt water into potable fresh water. Normally, sea water is evaporated by the sun’s rays and its vapor combines with the particles in the air to form clouds. This process is called water cycle. This natural process of evaporation is very slow and irregular. Also, due to increasing pollution and climate change in the world, the water cycle of the earth has been disrupted. The main results of which we can see all over the world in the form of heavy rains and droughts. In such a time, there is an urgent need for an innovation that meets the current and future water needs while saving the environment.

As for existing water desalination systems, solutions such as fuel based water purification system, heat energy distillation system, Sorek Desalination plant developed by Israel etc. are available. But no solution is pollution free. These solutions either use fuel or use electricity to purify water with reverse osmosis (RO) techniques that typically require a lot of energy and maintenance.

As for our solution against this, the solution is made without any pollution and on renewable resources. Nirmal Jal is a solar powered fully automatic plant with zero carbon emission. This could prove to be a great revolution in the field of seawater desalination. Our project is a one time investment project. Where none of the projects so far is a one-time investment project for purification of water sector. As our system is IoT based, every information related to the system, like system temperature, water level and salt concentration in each tank, all parameters of pure water like TDS, PH, Calcium Nitrate etc. will be available at the user’s finger tips, i.e. cell phone itself. We use copper pipes to cool the steam which is known to make the water pure and nutritious. We also use steam heat to heat fresh water which increases the efficiency of the system.

Normally, sunlight can heat water and evaporate it but this process is very slow. So, to speed up this process, we increase the heat by using mirrors and Fresnel-lenses. which helps to concentrate the sunlight in a small specific area. The desalination container is made of FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) material which has excellent heat resistance and prevents chemical reaction with salt water which is a feature not found in currently available systems. Hot steam from FRP tank is passed through copper pipe. This pipe is further passed through the supply tank due to which the saline water in the supply tank is heated and the steam is cooled. Thus the steam energy is not wasted. Which makes our system more efficient.

Finally the salt in the main tank can be further processed and sold. The system we have developed is fully automated which controls the flow of water to various tanks based on sensor data like tank water level, temperature, salt concentration and more using a microcontroller. By using IoT based microcontroller, we can efficiently collect the data of sensors and monitor the data and the entire flow to the smartphone with the help of internet. While at the same time, one can also manually control the valve using a smartphone.
